Massage therapist, fitness consultant, personal trainer and group fitness instructor

Joel BaldockJoel is one of our go-to persons in the gym for any questions or demonstrations. As a former gymnastics coach and massage therapist he knows his way around deconstructing movements and medical issues.

A little about me…

I grew up in Darwin, spending most of my time outside of school doing different sports. I eventually settled on baseball and gymnastics. I enjoy the Darwin lifestyle, whether it’s social BBQ’s, going out fishing or camping, sporting events or Mindil Markets.

You will often find me…

Studying when I can. Otherwise, I like cooking, reading, learning the guitar, training of all sorts or trying enjoying local events in Darwin, especially food and music related.

My favourite quote…

“Fear is the thief of dreams.”

What I love about fitness…

The health and fitness industry is a very driven, happy, positive and motivating industry to be involved with. You can help others improve themselves, especially those struggling with problems, illness or rehabilitation. You can be a part of their successes as they break down barriers and continually surprise themselves. You get to help make their lives better, whether they are unhealthy or an athlete, and it is an amazing privilege.

My approach to fitness…

I believe firstly, it can be used to help balance the body, reducing imbalances created by our lifestyle. This reduces stress, and helps our bodies maintain homeostasis.

As a gymnast I believe very strongly in the benefits of body weight and plyometric exercise. Used the correct way, these can help increase many areas of fitness. Simply look at a gymnast on TV, fairly impressive for non-weight lifters.

Finally, I believe you must spend as much effort on your recovery, as you do exercising. Whether it is yoga, stretching well, getting a massage or an ice bath. What you do to recover, and also having some down time, can have a big impact on how balanced your body and mind will be.

My hidden talents…

Being a gymnast, I may still have lots of tricks I can do. Splits? Walking on my hands? Flips? But that is all urban legend. I can give a great massage. I’m a qualified Massage Therapist.

I also like to appreciate something purely for what it is, or meant to be, without trying to impose some other perspective or ideal on it. A dog is a dog, why think about it in terms of a Scottish Desert Three-Eyed Pygmy Bunyip??

My specialty…

I really like fixing imbalances in people. Releasing tight muscles, massaging and stretching, to allow opposing muscles to get stronger. Fixing posture, and eventually gait.

I also like giving serious plyometric and body weight circuits to fitter people. Can’t play favourites and leave them out.
